In 1890, the Duke of Aosta visited Pontassieve after learning of a hidden gem in the cellar of the newly established Ruffino, a rising winery known for its Chianti. Impressed, he made Ruffino the royal supplier, and this wine has been a flagship since 1927, bearing its iconic label.

An expressive Syrah with gentle floral notes that are supported by savoury, umami flavours. The palate is elegant yet juicy and delicious. Fermentation and aging in clay amphorae pot has created a pure expression of Syrah that shows the exciting terroir of the Raupo vineyard, situated in the Omaka Valley of Marlborough.

Award-winning Central Otago Pinot Noir from one of the original producers of the region. A top quality wine that is charming and immediately appealing, showing sweet dark cherry, doris plum, subtle spice, and floral aromas on the nose. The palate is rich delivering ripe berry flavours with plush mouthfeel, well supported by a silky texture and elegant tannins. This is a very delectable style of Pinot Noir that always over delivers.

Blueberry aromas are complemented by dark licorice, chocolate and tobacco. The palate shows good richness with a pleasant acid vein that helps to carry the wine through the mouth to silky tannins.

Primary aromas of blackberry and dark cherry are complemented by notes of dark chocolate, freshly turned earth and bay leaf. Balanced acidity, textured tannins and subtle French oak envelop and focus the sweet, dark berry fruit into the long finish.

Cool red berry fruits, but berry fruits that are also ripe and rounded. The tannins are smooth and welcoming, yet cabernet tannins will do what cabernet tannins will do: sweep through the palate. Accompanying them is a neat acidity and a slick, balanced alcohol. Cabernet sauvignon in equilibrium.

Rich red berry flavours (grenache) then earth and spice and plums (shiraz) and thirdly a long, leafy back-palate (yes, mataro - you've worked this game out now, haven't you...) The sum, however, is much more than the parts. The tannins are neat but not in any way unnoticed. Acidity holds the line. The pure fruit and berry notes are balanced by the tannins and the oak's spice.

A soft and gently rounded palate with ample rich fruits smoothly laced with bucolic tannins and framed by a keen keel of stirring acidity. Plums and blackberries return along with hints of milk chocolate. The giving blackberry and plum fruit is perfectly counter-weighted by the strangely reassuring gruffness of the tannins.
