The Waiata Vineyard in North Canterbury is where the producers first started growing grapes, where the thought of making wine was born and where dreams came true. This is their heart and very precious to them. The name Waiata comes from the Maori word for singing and is at the heart of any celebration or gathering. The late Greg Trott saw many of his unusual dreams realised at Wirra Wirra. Yet one vision eluded him - to build a medieval siege machine, or trebuchet. Why? To use as a catapult to bomb neighbouring wineries with bottles of wine of course. This wine is part of a range, the RGT collection which remembers the pioneering spirit of Richard Gregory Trott.

Ever since the first release from the 1972 vintage, Church Block blends have been synonymous with great McLaren Vale red wine. Early wines were sourced from a neighbouring vineyard which ran adjacent to a small Bethany Church. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot grown in McLaren Vale; Church Block has a succulent core of ripe cassis and black fruits which fills the mouth and are balanced with subtle spicy oak characters and velvety tannins. This wine has a wonderful balance of intense rich fruit, fine tannins and refreshing acid structure.

This magnificent Shiraz is named after Robert Strangeways Wigley, a noted South Australian eccentric and state cricketer who established Wirra Wirra back in 1894. This is a flagship Shiraz that befits McLaren Vale's reputation as a first class producer of this varietal and home to some of the oldest shiraz vines in the world.

Planted in 1972, the Scrubby Rise vineyards at Wirra Wirra sit on ancient rocks more than 100,000 years old. The fact that they are totally flat and contain no 'scrub' or bush whatsoever was of more interest to the late Greg Trott, who gave them their dubious name. As one might call a redhead 'Bluey' or a tall man 'Shorty', Trott drew on traditional Aussie humour to make the point that we shouldn't take life too seriously. Be dedicated to your task he said, but everything else should be fun. That's a philosophy they aspire to at Wirra Wirra, as they raise a glass of this classic McLaren Vale shiraz.

The ¾ tonne Wirra Wirra bell that sits proudly atop their cellars is rung to announce the start and finish of each vintage in McLaren Vale and for other suitable celebrations. For generations it rung out thrice daily from the Jesuit Church at Norwood, South Australia at 6am, midday and 6pm, calling the faithful to joyful prayer. In honour of that tradition, the name 'The Vintage Bell' is reserved for only exceptional parcels of Cabernet Sauvignon which are selected and vinified at Wirra Wirra.
